Ripe vs unripe fruit – what is the difference?

This is of course very important! You don’t want to eat an unripe dragon fruit yet. Be aware: this is not harmful, but it is just a shame of your green dragon fruit cutting and the taste (in our opinion). But how can you distinguish the difference between a ripe dragon fruit which has a green dragon fruit color of itself, or a dragon fruit which is simply not ripe yet?

It is best to leave the green pitaya on the counter for instance for a few days to see if it still changes color. Otherwise the following technique might be handy to find out whether your pitaya is ripe or unripe. Push carefully with your thumb on the dragon fruit. The peel should feel soft, but not too mushy. If you have this, congratulations, your dragon fruit is ripe! If the greenish color still exists after that feeling, you have a green dragon fruit variety. Make sure not to leave your dragon fruit for too long (or without checking regularly) as the fruit can also be overripe after time, it is therefore best to eat it as soon as possible. If the skin is very pulpy, the fruit is most likely overripe already.
