Step-by-step plan to grow a dragon fruit plant from seeds

With this step-by-step plan you immediately have an idea how you can best take care of your dragon fruit seeds so that they grow into a healthy dragon fruit plant that bears fruit after some years. Find the steps below for a headstart with your dragon fruit plant from seeds.
1. Soaking your seed – Soak the seeds you have received in a glass of water for about 8 hours.
2. Where to start – We always advise you to start indoors with planting your pitaya seeds. This to create the optimal environment and to protect them from external conditions as they are really vulnerable in the beginning.
3.Planting the seeds – Plant the seeds (while being moist) in a potting soil that is well-draining (dragon fruits can be sensitive to ‘wet feet’) and rich in organic matter. Plant the seeds about two inches apart from each other in a pot. Make sure that you don’t plant them too deep.
4. Watering – Try to keep the soil moist, but make sure you don’t overwater your seeds of dragon fruit!
5. Dragon fruit seedlings – Over time you will move the dragon fruit seedling to a larger area and/or outside. When the plant is around 7 / 8 inches tall, you can keep it outdoors. Keep in mind that a mature dragon fruit plant will need a pot that is at least 20 inches wide. We always recommend growing 1 dragon fruit in 1 pot. but this is obviously for a further stage!
6. Supporting system – When your dragon fruit seeds are more than 14 inches tall we would recommend supporting it via a supporting system. You can easily create one yourself by setting up a trellis or wood. It is really important for them to place their energy in the right way.

The ideal conditions to make it a success

Of course, planting dragon fruit seeds is not just a matter of putting the seeds in the ground, following the steps and that’s it. The dragon fruit is a cactus plant and therefore certainly has its preferences. It is important to keep certain information in mind to increase your chances of growing your own dragon fruit! Very important is that a dragon fruit needs at least 6 hours of sunlight each day (indoors you can create your own sunlight of course) and it needs warm temperatures! Preferably a pitaya grows best between a temperature range of 20 and 35 degrees celsius. Do you want to know more about how to take care of your dragon fruit plant? There is certainly a difference. Some cuttings produce a more red color of fruit while other cuttings produce a more pink color of fruit. So consider carefully whether you want a pink or red variant. However, there is not much difference in taste we think.

The Palora dragon fruit (yellow dragon fruit), can be considered as one of the sweetest! However, keep in mind that this is our opinion. 🙂
